This is my Hole.

This nasty little horror story really shit me up earlier in the year. It’s called The Enigma of Amigara Fault, by the manga artist Junki Ito. It’s around 40 pages long, but it’ll only take you about 15-20 mins to read it, but I suspect the story will stay with a lot longer. I can’t really go into this story without giving it away, so it’s best you just read it, and then hate me for directing you to it and the nightmares that will follow. 🙂

Just remember – out in the mountains, there is a hole waiting for each and every one of us.

note to viewers: read panels right-to-left, or get very confused.

Ah yes, very good point. 🙂

Now I can’t get the scene of people being inexorably driven through the mountain out of my head.

As elegant a tale of horror as you are likely to find.

I’ve watched an awful lot of horror films, and as many books on the subject, but the Enigma of Amigara Fault tops the lot. A bit like the holes themselves, you can’t unsee it. What gets me is, as weird and abstract a concept it is, it somehow feels totally believable. I can see people wantonly stepping into these holes, even when they know it’s death waiting.
Yeah, I think this is actually scarier than the mutilation and demise. It’s the fact that you just *know* on that mountain there is *your* hole, and once you know it’s there, you’re as good as dead. Unlike Dracula or Freddy Kruegar, the hole doesn’t need to come looking for you. You’re going to walk right in.

Amigara Fault was first published in the back of Gyo by Junji Ito. Gyo is just as horrifying and incomprehensible and nightmarish. I love it.

But as a slight antidote, there’s a Chainsawsuit parody:

How nice! One of the essential twisted stories or morbid jokes related to speleology as manga comic! Even by the outstanding Japanese mangakas! Master Junji Ito cursed me again as is charming me for 20+ years 🙂 Since I am speleologist I love holes (caves in fact :-)The situation of feeling rock all around is something very usual (and exciting) for me. Perhaps there came a day and I will find the certain hole made for me 🙂
Btw. Name Amigara refers to what? A nutshell? My great grandmother skilled in Japanese a bit used to call me amigara (instead od dumbhead) if i did something wrong… The thing flashed in my mind when I first time spot “amigara fault” I did a lot of them as a child :-)))
